Personal Bio

Looking back at it now, it is hard to believe I grew up in the middle of a civil war, incomprehensible in the last decade of the 20th century, in Europe, and that I am now a citizen of the country that bombed the city of my birth and of my youth, Belgrade. It is a chaotic web of improbable events that led to where I am, and to opportunities. As boundaries were falling all around Europe, they were rising all around me. With a Serbian mother and a Croatian father, the crossing of boundaries is what I was. I could feel the irrationality of nationalism and tribal hatred in the way complete strangers reacted to my accent, or my last name. I rejected boundaries instinctively, by turning outward, learning foreign languages, traveling, and crossing borders whenever I was given a chance. As a child, despite the fact that my mother was a lawyer and my father a prominent photographer, I gravitated toward science and mathematics, which universally belong to no one and everyone. Science made borders senseless, and that is what I wanted to do.

At eighteen years of age, I left my war-torn country for America, leaving behind the familiar sounds of a language and way of life, knowing that from then on I would return to my childhood home only as a visitor. In coming to America, I arrived to opportunities inexhaustible in a lifetime. From all the choices before me, my choices remained my passions: I learned science and languages, and I insisted on supporting myself financially through something I enjoyed, teaching (mathematics). The decision to pursue medicine was made fairly early on, and although I loved the basic sciences, I felt biology without a patient was like a sailboat without the wind. This perspective carried over in my research, which continued to be patient focused. My Yale thesis project on Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia, a part of which was carried out in Italy, became something more meaningful and vivid as I learned to communicate with my patients in Italian. As I acquired more medical knowledge, I continued to utilize my language skills in international settings, including dermatology training at the University of Rome, and learning to care for HIV patients in Santiago, Chile. Understanding a language, like crossing a border is not the end point, but rather it is the point of departure.

Dermatology, like a photograph, is an open secret. The lesions present on the surface, the diagnoses, however, can lead to the most remote of etiologies, making the clinical work a daily discovery. Skin may seem like a border between individuals and their environment, but really it is a window to the diseases experienced by the body. By practicing Dermatology, I crossed over yet another border as a physician who understands that what matters most about what one sees is its link to what lies beneath. In my quest to shed boundaries that are either trivial or artificial, I have chosen a profession in which I will cross daily the very boundary whose integrity is the sine qua non of our existence: the skin.

Christina Pagan

Christina is our newest addition to the team. She has over 8 years of experience in dermatology and we are excited to have her be a part of the Hudson Derm Family!

“I’m from the Bronx, New York and I started working in dermatology in 2013. I’ve always enjoyed the business aspect of it, but throughout the years, I’ve learned a lot about skincare through my own experiences and others. Patient care is my top priority. I try as best as I can to make all patients feel as welcome and as comfortable as possible. I love to make others feel good. Outside of the derm life, I enjoy cooking, spending time with family, and finding new adventures!” – Christina

NYS Certified Aesthetician

Luzinete Ripardu

I am originally from Vitoria, Espirito Santo, Brazil where I discovered my passion for skin care. My mother always took great care of her skin using natural ingredients such as coffee, arnica, and other fruits, herbs, and substances. Growing up in a large family in Brazil I had a great childhood and my parents were my role models, so I followed in my mother’s footsteps and incorporated her skin care routine into my daily routine. I grew up in a tropical area where it was always sunny, so I was very cautious about taking care of my skin from a young age. Since my teenage years, I was always very careful about making sure I had sunscreen on to protect my skin. I always wanted to go to medical school, however this was difficult being that I had so many siblings and my parents did not have the means to send us all to school. I started working young in order to get myself into school. During this time I decided to move to New York City without any of my family where my dreams of medical school became even more difficult to achieve. I worked hard and was able to put myself into beauty school where I became even more interested in skin care. After my studies at Christine Valmy, I taught esthetics there to students whose first language was Portuguese or Spanish, preparing them for the State Board Exam.
Luzinete Ripardu
Afterwards, I realized I enjoyed working with doctors as patients can explain their concerns to the doctor, and the doctor and I can work together to figure out the best plan of action to help patients reach their goals. I have been an aesthetician for twenty years and it is my passion. I love helping patients feel more comfortable in their skin and see their skin improving. Since I have been an esthetician for so long, and esthetics is an ever changing field, I constantly keep up with all the new skin techniques. I travel to Europe, Brazil, and around the United States to take courses, such as in permanent makeup, to make sure my skills are always up to date. In Brazil there are many professionals that make various advancements in the field and I constantly go there to learn from my mentor, Dr. Izilda Penteado, who worked closely with Dr. Ivo Pitanguy. In my free time, I have come across people in my neighborhood and in Brazil suffering with acne and other skin issues and have treated them for free when they do not have the means to see an esthetician. I also love to spend time with my family – my husband, my two kids, and my dog. I also love to cook, garden, and paint. To see more about the work I have done, I have been featured in various magazines, such as Vogue, W, Elle, People magazine and more.

“I am excited to start my new journey with the HDLS family. Dermatology is not only external it can also be an indication of an internal medical condition. There is such a sense of accomplishment when we can bring positive change into a patient’s life. We never stop learning and with that knowledge our team is able to pass it along to patients. I feel gaining trust and building rapport with patients is very important. We pride ourselves on patient care. I am honored to be a part of and grow with this spectacular HDLS team!”

Medical Assistant

Julia Felsenheld

Julia recently joined our team and is very excited for the opportunity to gain clinical experience and learn from our amazing team of physicians and assistants. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 2020 and receiving an M.S. degree in Human Nutrition from Columbia University in 2022, she looks forward to applying her knowledge to helping and caring for others. Her interest in medicine, and particularly the field of dermatology stems from her own personal experience with a dog bite that left a scar on her face. She know how important one’s appearance can be, which is why she wants to ensure that patients feel confident and comfortable in their own skin. Julia’s personal experience, multiple surgeries and the journey to healing led her to pursue a path of becoming a doctor and applying to medical school in the near future.

“As a member of HDLS, I will go above and beyond to make patients feel secure, confident, and satisfied with their appearance. I look forward to assisting our patients and growing with such a wonderful team.”
